It was the swede Rasmus Kevin that wanted to start an american football team at Åbo Akademi University in the fall of 2009. He succeeded to gather a gang of enthusiastic people of whom never had before played american football.
This gang became the men’s team with the name Åbo Akaemi 09ers. Later that fall another team was formed, TUAS Tornadoes at Turku University of Applied Sciences, and both teams trained hard during the first half of the school year to learn the game as well as physically. Everything culminated in something never before seen in Finland – an event called Campus Touchdown Bowl where 2 collage teams met in a historic game. It was played in front of hundreds of people in the Caribia 994 arena in Turku on the 24th of March 2010. 09ers took home the win after a tough game ending with 28-18 on the scoreboard.
Campus Touchdown Bowl was the beginning for collage football. Next fall new teams were formed in Turku, Jyväskylä and Vaasa. In the spring 09ers played against TUAS Tornadoes, UTU Beaverhunters from University of Turku and Swedish National Defence College team FHS Cavlliers. Beaver Hunters won the unofficial Turku Championship between the local teams. In the fall of 2010 our activity expanded and a womens team Åbo Akademi IN10s was formed.
A common association, Amerikansk Fotboll vid Åbo Akademi r.f. – AFÅA for short, was founded to better organize the activites of both the men’s and the women’s team. IN10s played their first game against TUAS Tornadettes the 8th of April 2011 in an event named Campus Catfight. The Tornadettes were victorious but IN10s won the next year in an corresponding event of 2012. This last spring IN10s took home the Finnish student championship of american football played in Tampere.
